Hatay Steel Consortium

  • The Hatay Steel Consortium is an association established by the Hatay Metropolitan Municipality aimed at enhancing the international recognition of steel manufacturers in the region and emphasizing the land of Steel - Hatay's importance in global steel production and economy. The iron and steel industry in Turkiye is concentrated in the province of Hatay on the Mediterranean coast.

  • Nearly half of the 32 iron and steel industrial enterprises in Turkiye are located in Hatay that represents nearly half of Turkiye's total steel production. Additionally, 46.7% of rolling mills that produce profiles, sheets, rebar, and round construction steel from externally purchased billets operate in these provinces. For example, in 2013, 36.3% of the total employment provided by iron and steel industry enterprises occurred in Hatay.

  • In line with the region's growth, the liquid steel production capacity in Hatay has reached 25.8 million tons in the last five years. This has enabled Hatay to hold the majority of Turkiye's total steel production capacity of 50.2 million tons.

  • The first investment in the iron and steel sector in our province, the steel factory in Iskenderun, was established in 1967. The ground-breaking date for this facility is October 3, 1970, and it was gradually operational by 1975. In recent years, Iskenderun, a district of Hatay, has started integrated flat steel production by launching 40 new projects worth 3 billion USD. With the ongoing construction of a new steel mill and flat product investment worth 1.7 billion USD, our province's flat product production capacity will rise to 6.5 million tons per year.

  • In the Hatay Region, a variety of iron and steel products are produced, primarily including rebar, structural steel, flat products, billets, granules, sandwich panels, and profiles, which are exported worldwide.

TURKISH STEEL INDUSTRY

OVERVIEW

The Turkish steel industry holds a significant position in the global economy as the 7th largest steel producer in the world.

  • As of 2022, Turkiye's crude steel production capacity is approximately 50 million tons, with nearly half of the steel produced in Turkiye being manufactured in Hatay. In other words, Hatay is one of the largest steel-producing cities in the world.

  • Turkiye exports a large portion of the steel it produces. The primary buyers of Turkish steel products are various markets, including Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. Particularly, construction steel is one of the main steel products exported by Turkey.

  • The Turkish steel industry has been increasing its competitiveness by investing in technological innovations and modern production techniques, especially in recent years.

  • Companies in the sector are also making significant strides in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Turkiye has a total of 27 electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mills, 11 induction furnace mills, and 3 basic oxygen furnace mills.

A GROWING INDUSTRY

Since 1980, Turkiye has seen a significant increase in its steel exports. In the following 20 years, Turkiye entered the top 10 countries in terms of steel production, both in production and export.

  • 2001: The world's 10th largest steel producer.
  • 2019: The 8th largest in the world and the 2nd largest in Europe.
  • 2001-2011: The world's third fastest-growing steel producer after China and India.
  • 2021: Steel production increased from 15 million tons to 40.4 million tons, becoming the 7th largest steel producer in the world and the largest in Europe. Turkiye's largest iron and steel facility is also located in Hatay, Iskenderun.

The Agreement Signed Between the EU and Turkiye

 ECSC Treaty

  • The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) agreement, signed in 1996, abolished customs duties on steel trade mutually.

  • This agreement facilitates the trade of iron and steel products from Turkiye to EU member countries without customs duties.

  • All steel producers operating in Turkiye continuously monitor technological developments to strengthen the position of the national industry in the global market.

Logistic

  • The Iskenderun International Port is designed for the Hatay iron and steel sector and has a port area of 1,000,000 m².

  • The port has 8 berths, with a berth depth of 15.5 meters.

  • The length of the general cargo berth is 732 meters, the container berth length is 920 meters, and the annual container capacity is 1.000.000 units.

Transportation, Accommodation, Population, Climate

  • Hatay Airport has international flights with connections to Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, and Ankara every day of the week.

  • There are many high-quality hotels in the Hatay region, particularly in Antakya and Iskenderun, which are also attractive tourism areas.

  • With a population of 1,500,000, Hatay province experiences average summer temperatures of 32 degrees and winter averages of around 15 degrees. Despite mild winters, all four seasons can be experienced in the region.

  • Hatay city covers an area of 5,403 km², which is roughly the same size as the Madrid Metropolitan area.

History of the Ancient City Hatay

  • Antakya, known biblically as Antioch (Antiocheia) and more recently as Hatay, is the chief town of the frontier province of the very same name in south-eastern Turkiye. The province lies about 30 km from the Mediterranean in the alluvial plain of the Asi (the ancient Orontes) at the foot of Mount Habib Neccar (ancient Mons Silpius), and it is surrounded by large expanses of olive groves.

  • In 64 BC, Antakya joined the Roman Empire with the status of a free city. During this period, Julius Caesar, who visited the city in 47 BC, initiated the construction of large structures. Additionally, the Roman governor Cassius resisted the siege of the Parthians here. According to historical records, Antonius and Cleopatra also stayed as guests in this beautiful place for a while. Sources indicate that Christianity spread first from here to the world outside of Jerusalem. Between 34-36 AD, St. Paul, St. Barnabas, and St. Peter preached in the streets of Antakya.

  • The name "Christian" was first given to the believers of Jesus here, and the St. Peter's Church, recognized as the first church in the world, is also located in this city.

  • In the 1st century AD, Antakya was the third-largest city in the Roman Empire in terms of area and population. It was considered the fourth largest city in the world, after Rome, Alexandria, and Ctesiphon.

  • Antakya was strategically significant due to its location on major routes. The road from Mesopotamia via Aleppo led to the Mediterranean, while roads heading south from Anatolia reached Syria, Arabia, and Egypt from there. The city was not only a trade, industry, supply, and transit center where thousands of people visited and stayed every day, but also an important cultural center.
